Webinar Description:
This webinar is part of a continuing series that documents best practices in transportation education. This session will discuss effective approaches for engaging students through a variety of innovative course activities.

The first portion of the webinar will discuss several unique methods intended to facilitate students to think about transportation as a part of their daily lives through "insta-moments", where students take pictures of something in the real-world that is relevant to the transportation field and then post this along with their thoughts on the topic through social media platforms. The content will also include another novel concept, where students prepare elevator pitches that serve as business proposals for solutions that are conceptualized as a part of an introductory transportation engineering course.

The second portion of the webinar will discuss the challenges and opportunities of integrating advanced technologies into traffic and transportation courses, such as vehicle electrification, connectivity, and automation. As the industry moves towards wider scale Advanced Driving Assistance Systems on vehicles, students need to be prepared to interpret and implement the effects on the transportation system. This presentation will provide strategies for integration of these technologies into traditional transportation and traffic engineering courses, as well as strategies for self-study opportunities for students wanting to improve their knowledge in these emerging areas.

Learning Objectives:

  • Use social media platforms to provide opportunities for students to demonstrate understanding of practical transportation concepts in real-world settings.
  • Leverage innovative methods to facilitate student learning, including the development of elevator pitches and/or business proposals detailing solutions to transportation problems.
  • Integrate various emerging technologies, such as Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) into transportation curricula.
