Digital Badge Program - Advancing STEM Education Through Transportation Studies (ASETTS)

This webinar is led by the ITE Education Council.

Webinar Description:
In this webinar, the speaker will present details of the ongoing stackable units digital badge program at North Carolina A&T State University. This National Science Foundation (NSF) funded digital badge program, called ASETTS (Advancing STEM Education Through Transportation Studies), strives to advance STEM education through activities designed to increase the number of highly skilled undergraduate students entering the transportation workforce. The ASETTS program uses a stackable-units framework through which students can earn digital badges (micro-credentials) that are displayed on certificates provided to the students, thus incentivizing student participation in transportation career development activities.

The webinar will discuss the motivation behind the ASETTS program, and the program elements designed to increase students’ skillsets along various dimensions of transportation careers such as skills pertaining to life/career, innovation, technology, research, and core subject matter. Furthermore, lessons learned from the ongoing program at NCA&T will be presented tied with some of the advancements in STEM Education fields towards engaging minority or underrepresented students.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the usefulness of micro credentialing and digital badges towards increasing student motivation.
  • Identify opportunities and challenges associated with diversifying student training in various skillsets.
  • Apply key findings from STEM education research in experiential learning techniques towards design of courses in transportation studies.
