Webinar Description:
This webinar provides a brief overview of the Highway Safety Manual (HSM), an overview of the predictive method for estimating expected average crash frequencies, and the role of observed crash data. Content will include the applicability of the empirical Bayes (EB) method and various methods for conducting safety performance evaluation identified in the HSM. The webinar will also discuss lessons learned from various case studies across the country that evaluate the safety of multiple design alternatives, highlighting methods and tools utilized for the evaluation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall basic safety terminology, sources of information, and available tools;
  • Identify the predictive method for calculating the predicted and expected crash frequency, as well as the role of observed crash data;
  • Understand the various methods for estimating the safety effectiveness of a proposed project; and
  • Understand the importance of selecting the right approach and tools as part of the project evaluation.

Policies: The webinar recording is available on-demand it will have a shelf life of 60 days to register before it is archived.     Dante Perez-Bravo is a senior engineer with Atkins – Austin office. He has 16 years of experience providing highway safety, traffic operations, and transportation planning services for public and private agencies at local, regional, and state levels. Mr. Perez-Bravo has led or had a significant role in the development of several large transportation planning and highway safety projects in 18 states. He has co-authored manuals for NCHRP, FHWA, and state departments of transportation. Dante is a registered PE in Illinois and Texas and holds PTOE and RSP1 certifications.
