Latest Updates on ITE's Informational Report on Speed Humps and other Vertical Deflection Techniques

    • Overview

    Thank you

The live event has ended. Recording now available to stream.

This webinar is led by ITE Traffic Engineering Council.

    Webinar Description:
A Task Force of the Traffic Engineering Council updated the ITE Recommended Practice on Speed Humps and is near final publication of A Guide to Vertical Deflection Speed Reduction Techniques: Planning and Design of Speed Humps, Speed Tables and Other Related Measures. The update addresses numerous changes which will be highlighted in the webinar.

    Learning Objectives:

    • List the changes and updates to ITE's Recommended Practice for speed humps, speed tables, raised intersections, raised pedestrian crossings and fully mountable mini-roundabouts as techniques for speed reduction
    • Identify the best practices for application of vertical deflection techniques
    • Define the current before and after data regarding performance of vertical deflection techniques
    • State key design considerations for speed humps and other vertical deflection measures
    • Describe current evaluation of impacts of vertical deflection on property values and risk management

The update addresses numerous changes which will be highlighted in the webinar including:

    1. Moving beyond simply speed humps to a suite of vertical deflection techniques including speed tables, raised pedestrian crossings, raised intersection and fully mountable mini-roundabouts
    2. Evolving from transverse speed hump designs to cushion speed hump designs
    3. Updated dimensions and design characteristics
    4. Extensive data on before/after performance in reducing vehicle speeds and volume
    5. Greater definition to guide definition of a "speeding" or "volume" problem on neighborhood streets based on empirical data from prior agency actions to address these issues with vertical deflection
    6. New metrics for assessing speed, including focus on safety related measures that address excessive speeding (vehicles traveling 5 and 10 mph above properly posted speed limits) and uniformity of vehicles speeds (pace)
    7. Guidance on collecting speed data and specific input on the "bins" used to summarized speed distribution data
    8. Current signing and striping guidance
    9. Risk management case studies related to prior legal actions
