Join us for an informative webinar on establishing safe speed limits with a strong focus on safety-driven approaches. In this session, our speakers, including a consultant (PA) and public sector employee (GA), will share their insights, experiences, and best practices for setting speed limits that prioritize safety on our roads. Whether involved in urban planning, transportation engineering, law enforcement, or public policy, this webinar offers actionable strategies and perspectives that are being used to enhance your approach to setting safe speed limits and promoting road safety for all. Don't miss this opportunity to learn from industry leaders and contribute to the conversation on creating safer streets for everyone.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore effective methodologies and best practices employed by consultants and public sector professionals in setting appropriate speed limits to mitigate road risks and enhance overall safety.
  • Identify key factors influencing speed limit decisions, such as road type, traffic volume, pedestrian activity, and surrounding land use, and learn how to apply these considerations in practice.
  • Understand the principles of safety-driven speed limit establishment, including the role of data analysis, road design, and community engagement in ensuring safe travel conditions.

The webinar recording will be made available on-demand it will have a shelf life of 60 days to register before it is archived. Participants are able to purchase and retrieve their PDH credit certificate until their access to the content expires. After the content expires and goes into archive, the PDH credit certificate opportunity is forfeited.

  • Moderator: Tyler Hartman, P.E., Traffic Design Manager | Century Engineering, A Kleinfelder Company | Dover, DE, United States

    Tyler Hartman is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE), and Road Safety Professional Level 1 (RSP1) serving as the Traffic Design Manager for Century Engineering, a Kleinfelder company located in Dover, Delaware. He graduated from Widener University with a degree in Civil Engineering and embarked on his career at Michael Baker International in Harrisburg, PA. There, Tyler gained extensive experience in traffic signal design, ITS design, signing and striping designs, and MOT designs. Since joining Century in 2020, Tyler has excelled as the traffic design manager, overseeing projects across multiple states including Delaware, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas. In addition to his professional responsibilities, Tyler is actively involved in various committees and positions within ITE, such as serving as the Eastern Area Coordinator and STEM Committee Chair in MASITE, Young Member Committee Chair for MCDITE, and Young Member Committee Co-Chair for ITE International.

  • Moderator: Morgan Nelson, P.E., PTOE, Traffic Engineer | Kimley-Horn | Saint Paul, MN, United States

    As a traffic engineer at Kimley-Horn and Associates in Saint Paul, MN, Morgan Nelson is passionate about connecting with people to find innovative solutions. She leads projects in both the public and private sectors in communities across the Midwest. Morgan graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Morgan’s involvement in ITE has been consistent and energized at the local, district and international levels throughout her career. She is currently serving as one of the co-chairs for the International Younger Member Committee, is the Great Lakes District Sponsorship Chair and is the North Central Section Representative to the Great Lakes District Board. She was recognized as the 2022 Great Lakes District Rising Star and a 2022 Young Leader to Follow and graduated from the LeadershipITE program in 2023.

  • Marvin Ta, P.E., Staff Engineer II | Pennoni | Philadelphia, PA, United States

    Marvin graduated from Drexel University with a BS in Civil Engineering in 2019. He currently works within the transportation division, specifically under the traffic group, and has been with the company since graduating. His experience includes signal retiming, active transportation planning, and various traffic studies including establishing speed limits on local roads in PA through the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). In the past, Marvin has spoken at various virtual ITE events, primarily the drop-in sessions. He has also been a speaker at all three levels of ITE annual meetings (section, district, and international).

  • Samuel Harris, P.E., Assistant State Traffic Engineer | Georgia Department of Transportation | Atlanta, GA, United States

    Samuel Harris holds a Bachelor's degree in Science from Georgia College and a Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is a registered professional engineer in Georgia and currently serves as one of the Assistant State Traffic Engineers for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), overseeing the Safety, Permiting, Data, Operational Improvement, and RAID programs. Samuel's career at GDOT began with responsibilities ranging from traffic signal timing and modeling to aiding in the deployment of Automated Traffic Signal Performance Metrics (ATSPM). He previously held the role of State Safety Engineering Manager, overseeing the State's Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funding. A 2023 LeadershipITE alumni, Samuel also holds positions as the 2024 Georgia Section President and Secretary of the ITE Safety Council.
