Improving Highway Safety with ITS
A Blended Learning Course developed by ITE and the Consortium for Innovative Education at the University of Maryland

This course is an introduction to ITS-based strategies and tools available for improving highway safety. This course is intended for ITS, transportation operations, and safety professionals, including, but not limited to, planners, operators, designers, emergency management, and maintenance personnel. This course is divided into five lessons, each intended to introduce or illustrate concepts relating to the development and deployment of ITS strategies to address safety issues.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the overall magnitude and importance of highway safety
  • Recognize and discuss the contribution ITS can make in improving highway safety
  • Identify applications in the connected vehicle program that are primarily safety related
  • Describe the framework for considering ITS countermeasures within your safety planning process
  • Exploit practical opportunities for collaboration among Safety and ITS personnel
  • Employ several ITS and Safety resources

Conference Calls
Wednesday, September 26, 2018, 1:00 – 1:30 PM (ET)
The instructor will introduce the course and let you know what to expect and what will be expected from you. The instructor will also discuss Workshop #1. Students will be able to ask questions about course format, upcoming workshop assignments, etc.
Wednesday, October 10, 2018, 1:00 – 2:00 PM (ET)
Conference call with the instructor – If students have any questions about the course material reviewed to date or the course workshop, they should submit them to the instructor via e-mail by 9:00 AM (ET) the day of the call. The instructor will answer them during the conference and will also discuss Course Workshop # 1. Dial-in information will be posted in Moodle.

By 11:55 PM (ET) on Saturday, October 6, 2018, students will post their answer to this workshop in the “Forums” section.
By 11:55 PM (ET) on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, students will review other student submittals and comments on at least three of them. Answers to this workshop will be discussed during the conference call on October 10, 2018.
Course Workshop #2
By 11:55 PM (ET) on Saturday, October 20, 2018, students will post their answer to this workshop in the “Forums” section.
By 11:55 PM (ET) on Tuesday, October 23, 2018, students will review other student submittals and comments on at least three of them. Answers to this workshop will be discussed during the conference call on October 24, 2018.

Final Exam
Wednesday, October 24– Sunday, October 28, 2018
The final exam will be available in Moodle from 2:30 PM (ET) on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 through 11:55 PM (ET) on Sunday, October 28, 2018. Students will complete the final exam online. In order to receive continuing education units (CEUs), student must also complete the online course survey.

Course Grades
Grades for the course will be determined by student participation in the following items and will be weighted as shown below. Students need to receive a 70% or better to pass the course.

All content including web conferences, workshops, and the exam will be delivered on the Consortium for Innovation Transportation Education's Learning Management System. This offering is not eligible for free registration for ITE student members.
