  • Sam Schwartz

    Mr. Schwartz is President, and CEO of Sam Schwartz Transportation Consultants, a firm that specializes in transportation planning and engineering. He is the traffic columnist, Gridlock Sam, for The New York Daily News. Previously Mr. Schwartz was New York City’s Traffic Commissioner and was the Chief Engineer of the NYC Department of Transportation. He started his transportation career in the late 1960’s as a NYC cabbie and joined the Traffic Department, as a junior engineer, in 1971.

    Mr. Schwartz’s most recent books, Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and The Fall of Cars (2015) and No One at the Wheel: Driverless Cars and the Road of the Future (2018) lay out a recipe for cities faced with rapid changes in modes, automation, demographic shifts and travelers’ preferences.

    Mr. Schwartz has been an adjunct professor for 40 years at some of New York City’s most respected colleges and universities including Cooper Union, Long Island University, Hunter College and Brooklyn College.

    Mr. Schwartz is a Life Member of the Institute of Transportation Engineers having joined as a graduate student in 1970.
    He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at Brooklyn College and received a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Florida.

  • Joe Iacobucci

    Joe Iacobucci is the Director of Transit for Sam Schwartz, with a focus in the Midwest and West Coast, and leads the firm’s national New Mobility Practice.

    Mr. Iacobucci has over 14 years managing complex, high-profile transit and transportation projects. His ability to manage projects through an implementation lens and communicate technical details to all stakeholders are keys to the success of his work. Mr. Iacobucci always ensures a focus on social equity and economic benefits that can be leveraged by transit mobility improvements.

    Prior to joining Sam Schwartz, he served in leadership positions at Chicago Transit Authority, including several years managing the agency’s strategic planning department. His most significant work was his role in launching Chicago’s Bus Rapid Transit program, which included the planning, design, and construction of the Jeffery Jump and the Loop Link and guiding the Ashland Avenue BRT through the NEPA process.

    Mr. Iacobucci has also been at the forefront of working with cities, institutions, and the private sector on the dramatic changes in transportation brought upon by technology and the shared economy. The key to Mr. Iacobucci’s approach on shared mobility analysis is an intuitive grasp of mass transit, mobility, access, market optimization, and transportation technology, advising clients on integrating shared mobility with traditional fixed route transit. He has interviewed transit leadership from around the country leading the first quantitative analysis on the relationship between traditional fixed transit and transportation network companies trips.
