  • Arpana Vidyarthi, MD

    Dr. Vidyarthi is passionate about enabling individuals and organizations to transform and thrive. Over her 20 year career, she has developed deep expertice in system improvement, organizational develoment, leadership, and education. She has applied this expertise in Academic Medicine, private practice, and non-profit realms.

    Dr Vidyarthi has led hospital system redesign and improvement initiatives worldwide. Through multiple roles at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), she developed elevated QI infrastructures, created a novel financial incentive program for residents to improve care quality, and informed national efforts in duty hour reduction, handoff communication and discharge improvement. Globally, as the Division Chief of Advanced Internal Medicine at the National University Hospital, Singapore, she led a team that integrated the US-based Hospital Medicine and UK-based Acute Medicine systems thus creating new care models adopted across Asia.

    Dr. Vidyarthi has expertise in organizational development and leadership. She earned a master’s degree in Individual and Organizational Psychology and has developed and taught programs for healthcare providers cross California (the Institute for Physician Leadership) nationally (the IPC-UCSF Fellowship for Hospitalist Leaders), Singapore (the Ministry of Health Chief Residency Development Program) and Asia-Pacific (Initiative to Improve Health in Asia: Program for Public Health Leaders) She currently facilitates bespoke programs for individuals and organizations in these arenas. She applied her organizational development skills in the private practice as Chief Medical Officer at Private Medical, a national primary care retainer-based practice.

    Dr. Vidyarthi is at heart a teacher, mentor, and coach. She has held multiple leadership roles in medical education, and continues to actively mentor and coach students, residents, physicians, and others. She is committed to service and is focusing on homelessness in San Francisco as the Board President for the Homeless Prenatal Program and a member of the Board of Advisors for the Healing Well. She has also been a member of the Board of Trustees for the Drew School (San Francisco) and the Singapore American School.

    Dr. Vidyarthi received her undergraduate degree from Macalester College (Ethnic Relations) and her medical degree from the University of Minnesota. She completed Residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance, Harvard Medical School, and a Fellowship in Hospital Medicine and Clinical Research at UCSF. She holds a master’s degree in Individual and Organizational Psychology (Executive Masters in Change) from INSEAD, and Executive Coaching certification from the NeuroLeadership Institute. She is an alumnus of the Harvard Macy Program for Leaders in Healthcare Education, the California Healthcare Foundation Leadership Program, and the Global Health Leadership Forum. Dr. Vidyarthi has published more than 50 peer-review articles. She resides in San Francisco with her daughters, Anaiya and Nika, and husband Rajiv. She is a selfproclaimed “grown up backpacker” who enjoys intrepid global travel, scuba diving and tennis.
