The accelerated emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) will have far-reaching effects on medical practice operations. Already, AI has palpably impacted areas as diverse as clinical decision support, documentation, and claims adjudication. However, practices have varied levels of readiness to engage with AI-driven solutions, and care must be taken to ensure this is done in a way that creates value for patients, providers, and administrators. The goal of this session is to help attendees become informed consumers of AI. The speakers will present a didactic introduction to AI, providing an overview of its latest advancements, such as predictive analytics and generative AI. Attendees will also learn about AI’s application in healthcare, focusing on its current and future impact on practice management, as well as how to leverage research-backed strategies for optimal financial and operational outcomes.

  • Brian W. Smith, PhD, MBA

    Founder, Galvanic Health

    Brian W. Smith helps growing medical groups with efficiency, sustainability, and profitability by leveraging data for operations improvement. He is the founder of Galvanic Health, a boutique consulting practice combining proprietary data analytics with strategic insights to drive practice performance. Brian’s experience includes machine learning for medical event prediction, and he was a key member of a Stage 1 Finalist team in the CMS Artificial Intelligence Health Outcomes Challenge. Brian was formerly Chief Operating Officer at United Rheumatology (now Specialty Networks), a national management services organization, where he led the creation of a Qualified Clinical Data Registry to support quality reporting for value-based initiatives. He also served as Chief Business Officer of a scaling specialty practice and has held leadership roles in two hospital systems. He started his career as a research scientist, which was the genesis of his focus on data-driven decision-making. Brian holds an MBA from The Wharton School, a PhD in engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and Six Sigma Black Belt certification from the University of Michigan.

    Co-Founder, Managing Director, Return on AI Institute

    Laks Srinivasan has over 15 years of experience in enabling digital/data/analytics/AI-driven transformation as a trusted advisor, board member, executive, and entrepreneur. Currently, Laks is Co-Founder and Managing Director at Return on AI Institute, a best practices business research, executive learning and coaching, and advisory firm helping enterprises maximize economic and social return on AI. At the Institute, he helps companies that have been slow to adopt digital technologies and their leadership teams to understand AI, prepare the organization, and execute on AI-driven transformations. Previously, Laks was Chief Operating Officer of Opera Solutions, an applied AI and ML solutions company with top placement in many ML competitions including the Netflix prize, KDD Cup, and Kaggle. Prior to Opera Solutions, Laks was with FICO (NYSE: FICO), an analytics company that helps businesses make better decisions that drive more growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction. Laks holds an MBA from The Wharton School, as well as a BS in electrical engineering from NIT, India. He is a senior fellow for leadership development at the Enterprise Systems Center, Lehigh University, where he mentors senior and graduate students on data, analytics, and AI projects for industry and government.
