Physician-patient relationships are the foundation of medical care. Generally, effective relationships support quality medical care. When the relationships become ineffective, the physician or patient may end the relationship. Physicians should appropriately manage and terminate these relationships to prevent medical professional liability claims and licensing board complaints.

During this live webinar, our Risk Management Services Supervisor, Jeremy M. Hodder, and Senior Legal Risk Management Consultant, Jeanne Varner Powell, will explain how these situations can turn into a lawsuit or board investigation, will describe various patient scenarios, and how to appropriately manage the termination process.

Jeremy M. Hodder, MICA

Jeremy M. Hodder, DHSc, MSc, PG Dip (Law), BScN. (Hons), CPHRM, RN is the Risk Management Services Supervisor at MICA. He has over 30 years of leadership, management, and clinical experience in health care. As a registered nurse, he has practiced across a wide and varied range of clinical areas including medical, surgical, orthopedic, pediatric, burns, plastic surgery, and cardiac telemetry. Jeremy served as a commissioned officer with the British Army between 1991 and 1999. Jeremy was conferred with the degrees of Master of Science in Management of Human Services in 2004, and with a Post Graduate Diploma in Law in 2004. In 2014, he was conferred with the degree of Doctor of Health Sciences, and in 2015 with degree of Bachelor of Science (First Class Honors) in nursing. He is also a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM).
Jeanne E. Varner Powell, MICA

Jeanne E. Varner Powell, JD, is the Senior Legal Risk Management Consultant for MICA's Risk Management Services department. Jeanne has been a successful attorney for over 20 years. She spent 17 years as a litigator, defending hospitals, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals. One of the things she enjoyed most during those years was educating, coaching, and supporting physicians and other health care professionals through the litigation process. As a member of the Risk Management Services team, she helps physicians and other members of the health care team avoid allegations of professional negligence and improve patient outcomes. Jeanne spends her free time riding horses, hiking, and camping. Her 23-year-old son is the light of her life.
