Thanks to improvements in treatment and the changing demographics of when people are diagnosed with HIV, the majority of people living with HIV (PLWH) are over the age of 50 years in the US, with the Michigan statistics being 44%. As increased age and common comorbid conditions increase the risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's disease (MCI and AD), and HIV itself is a risk of HAND, it is becoming increasingly important that HIV clinicians are able to differentiate between these diagnoses for proper treatment.
