Description
Many clinical settings are experiencing shortages in staff. Despite these shortages, treatment programs must still do their best to meet the needs of those they serve. At times, treatment teams may be prevented from matching all clients to counselors of a requested gender. This webinar will discuss ways to support clients of different genders while also allowing counselors to use appropriate clinical strategies to navigate potential roadblocks related to gender.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify three ways gender differences between counselor and client will impact the therapeutic relationship.
- Participants will be able to identify unique needs between people of various genders to enhance motivation during treatment.
- Participants will be able to describe three ways to navigate potential barriers to treatment caused by gender differences.
Presenters
Fredrick Dombrowski, PhD, LMHC, MAC, CASAC
Fredrick Dombrowski, PhD, LMHC, MAC, CASAC, has worked as a clinician in the field of co-occurring disorders since 1998. Dombrowski has used evidence based practices in varying forms of treatment (CBT for gender dysphoria and chronic pain, DBT for personality disorders, MI for substance use treatment). He has experience as a supervisor and director for multiple programs including inpatient, outpatient, and forensic treatment. As an educator, Dombrowski is focused on experiential learning through a perspective of cultural humility and an equitable approach to clinical care. As a supervisor, Dombrowski remains focused on improvement of clinical care through supervision dedicated to evidence based practices.

Tara Matthews, PhD, LPC, MAC
Tara Matthews, PhD, LPC, MAC, is an educator, integrative health coach, clinical supervisor, and therapist. She works with clients who are living with co-occurring disorders and students who seek to learn more about addiction psychology. She has facilitated therapeutic groups for more than 15 years and taught in higher education for 11 years. She has provided supervision to undergraduate and graduate students, those seeking professional licensure, and provided health coaching to colleagues. Her interests include group counseling, addictions, nutrition for mental health, self-care, online supervision, and making ethics fun to learn and practice.

This course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $15 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
