Description
One of the biggest challenges in medication assisted treatment and recovery (MATR) settings is managing the volume and variety of patient need to counselor ratio. Often, patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) can benefit from additional support in care coordination and case management. Even when a patient has reached a phase of healthy maintenance, their care often slips during transition of care and referral management. A dedicated peer recovery support specialist (PRSS) can address this gap and many more patient needs. Lived experience can have tremendous value in MATR settings, but care coordination is an additional benefit to adding PRSS to the treatment and recovery workforce.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe the unique need OUD patients have in MATR settings that may often go unaddressed.
  • Participants will be able to identify five key value-adds that PRSS bring to office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) and opioid treatment programs (OTPs).
  • Participants will be able to summarize how to fund, recruit, and incorporate PRSS in clinical treatment

Sloane Book, CPRS

Sloane Book, CPRS, is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) and a mother to an amazing little boy. She is actively pursuing a degree in Human Services and Mental Health to become an addiction counselor, and she is in long-term recovery. When presented with the choice to remain in Florida and either end up dead or in prison or take a chance and move to Colorado to regain her life, she took a leap and moved to Colorado. While navigating through sobriety, she learned that she was no longer ashamed of her past; instead wanted to embrace it and try to help others find a way out. Once Book felt solid enough in her recovery, she became a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist and started working at Behavioral Health Group in Denver. Book realized that using her story and sarcastic personality would serve her life purpose. Every day, she connects with new people and helps them on their own recovery paths through support, connection, and encouragement.

Will Richardson, CPRS

Will Richardson, CPRS, is a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist with Behavioral Health Group, U.S. Navy Submarine Veteran, and a father of two. When it comes to teaching the intricacies of recovery, Richardson uses his 15 years of addiction and nine years of sobriety along with the techniques learned in peer recovery specialist classes to instill a sense of hope in those struggling with recovery. Richardson realized early on that he can be an instrument of service and peace to those struggling with addiction and help them manage their demons. He teaches people in recovery to embrace who they are. Why? For one simple reason: When you learn about yourself you can turn your biggest weakness into your greatest strength. When you do that, nobody can hold your weaknesses against you ever again.
