Limited studies examine how traditional American Indian/Alaskan Native and Western healing practices are being combined in treatment for Indigenous clients. This webinar will discuss braiding Western treatment modalities and Indigenous approaches for substance use disorders for American Indian/Alaskan Native clients by introducing a culturally responsive method called the ‘Sweetgrass Method.’ This webinar will also examine some observed responses to historical and intergenerational trauma, which include signs of overall poor physical health, depression, and substance use disorder.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe how historical/intergenerational trauma impacts American Indian/Alaskan Natives today.
  • Participants will be able to summarize the positive correlation between adverse childhood experiences among American Indian/ Alaskan Native and substance disorders.
  • Participants will be able to utilize culturally sensitive therapies and culturally responsive methods in developing treatment/healing plans for clients.

M. Standing Eagle Baez, PhD, LSP, LCDC, CCBT

M. Standing Eagle Baez, PhD, LSP, LCDC, CCBT, has worked in this field since 2000 and has provided individual and group treatment for non-Native and Native communities. For the past 20 years, he has worked with psychologists, mental health professionals, and SUD counselors to better address treatment approaches with Indigenous populations. His topics of expertise include Native American addiction approaches, culturally responsive addiction methods for Native Americans/Alaska Natives, suicide and substance use disorders among Native American youth, historical trauma, and intergenerational trauma.

These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.

To earn a CE Certificate for viewing this webinar, you must view the webinar in its entirety, pass the CE quiz, and complete the online survey evaluation.

  1. Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $15 processing fee to access the quiz.
  2. A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
  3. Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
