Rehabilitating Addiction Treatment: An Anti-Racist Recovery Approach

Description
Addiction counselors increasingly work with clients who present with diverse intersectional identities. Although research documents declining life expectancy across racial groups, clinical guidelines remain silent on how to recognize and interrupt institutional racism in addiction recovery. In this presentation, participants will be introduced to tools of analysis to understand, address, and interrupt white supremacy dynamics when treating substance use in outpatient and inpatient settings. Participants will be introduced to concepts of internalized racial superiority and internalized racial oppression, as well as a framework to illuminate how institutional pressure to maintain “white innocence” leads to poor health outcomes.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will define white institutional values in the context of addictive processes.
- Participants will identify how internalized racial superiority and internalized racial oppression present in the clinical setting.
- Participants will be able to apply harm reduction approaches to address racial superiority.

Sarah Buino, LCSW, RDDP, CADC, CDWF
Sarah Buino, LCSW, RDDP, CADC, CDWF, is a speaker, teacher, therapist, and the founder of Head/Heart Therapy in Chicago. She is a licensed clinical social worker, registered dual diagnosis professional, certified addictions counselor, NARM Therapist and a Certified Daring Way™ facilitator. She holds a Master’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago and specializes in shame, trauma, and substance use disorders. Buino has trained in a variety of therapy modalities, including NARM (neuro-affective relational model), sensorimotor psychotherapy, comprehensive energy psychology, psychodrama/experiential therapy, and shame-resilience. She uses these modalities as a framework to support resilience within her clients and create a space for self-knowledge and growth.

She offers a self-paced online training for therapists on psychotherapy and cannabis. As a speaker, Suzuki enjoys presenting ideas that ignite and inspire. She grounds her approach to both counseling in an antiracist analysis, sharing a vision of a multicultural and transformed society. In 2018, her talk on facing fear went viral, with over 2 million views and counting. Suzuki has been a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) since 2010 and participated in the certification process in 2017.

Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.

- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
