Description
Forty years after its arrival in the addiction world, why has codependency never become a formalized, criteria-based diagnosis in the DSM or ICD? When is it time to consider newer, more attachment-based models? This talk pushes aside the 40-year-old as-yet-unproven concepts defining codependency to consider newer, more strengths-based care.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe five distinctions between codependence and newer attachment-based models to support families of those suffering from a substance use disorder.
- Participants will be able to verbalize three insights into providing effective, attachment/strengths-based models toward improved assessment and treatment planning for the families and loved ones of those suffering from a substance use disorder.
- Participants will be able to identify four key historical events that led to the birth of the codependency movement in the 1980s - 1990s.

Robert Weiss PhD, LCSW, is the Chief Clinical Officer of Seeking Integrity Treatment Programs. Seeking Integrity offers both in-person and online help for men and their loved ones to heal intimacy disorders, sexual addiction, and concurring drug use disorders. Weiss developed and oversees Seeking Integrity’s current residential treatment programming. Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.
Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.

- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
