Description
Forty years after its arrival in the addiction world, why has codependency never become a formalized, criteria-based diagnosis in the DSM or ICD? When is it time to consider newer, more attachment-based models? This talk pushes aside the 40-year-old as-yet-unproven concepts defining codependency to consider newer, more strengths-based care.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to describe five distinctions between codependence and newer attachment-based models to support families of those suffering from a substance use disorder.
  • Participants will be able to verbalize three insights into providing effective, attachment/strengths-based models toward improved assessment and treatment planning for the families and loved ones of those suffering from a substance use disorder.
  • Participants will be able to identify four key historical events that led to the birth of the codependency movement in the 1980s - 1990s.
