Description
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth are consistently marginalized and as a result are at greater risk of alcohol misuse. This workshop will identify the unique challenges LGBTQ youth face, address indicators that lead LGBTQ youth to misuse alcohol, strategies that address the specific needs of this demographic, and critical tools to affirm LGBTQ youth in your community. By working with LGBTQ youth in their early development, you have the power to support youth to engage in a community where they can embrace their identity—decreasing the statistic of alcohol misuse.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify indicators that lead LGBTQ youth to misuse alcohol.
- Participants will be able to understand why the LGBTQ youth population is at greater risk of alcohol misuse.
- Participants will be able to make a plan when working with LGBTQ youth to affirm their specific needs.
Presenters
Mike Freeman
Mike Freeman (he/him/his) holds a Master’s degree in Psychology specializing in LGBTQ Youth Studies. Freeman's position at the Los Angeles LGBT Center focuses on addressing substance misuse, leading prevention initiatives focused on LGBTQ youth, and building capacity for a coalition. Supervising school-based programs, he and his team provide training and support to students, teachers, and administrators to make impactful changes on school campuses in Los Angeles and nationwide. He has brought his experience to national conferences helping prevention workers identify strategies to make their communities more inclusive for LGBTQ youth. Freeman has over ten years of experience working with LGBTQ youth and communities.

Valentina D’Alessandro
Valentina D’Alessandro (she/her) supports over 30 national School Districts part of the Out for Safe Schools® campaign at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. She has over 15 years of experience in education and worked at Arcigay, Italy's foremost national LGBT rights organization, the LGBTQ Center of Bologna, the GAY LEX Law Firm and other agencies. D'Alessando is a member of the Stonewall National Education Project (SNEP) Organizing Committee, as well as Equality California's Safe and Supportive Schools Advisory Committee. She studied Education at University of Bologna and later continued her studies at the University of Trento where she focused on Neuroscience and Psychology.

Beginning and Intermediate
Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area, include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue, and involve learning and comprehending content.
Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.

This course meets the qualifications for one and a half (1.5) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
