Description
There has been significant focus on diversity and inclusion in the field of addiction and recovery, yet one term that often gets overshadowed is the concept of equity. Equity refers to a state where everyone has an equal opportunity, regardless of race, ethnicity, age, physical ability, gender, etc. Often confused with equality, equity and equality both emphasize fairness. The subtle difference is that equality does this by treating everyone the same regardless of need, and equity does this by treating people differently dependent on need. How can treatment providers remove barriers and meet the unique needs of African Americans to provide equitable care? This presentation will focus on solutions to bring about systemic change in the form of equity.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to define equity vs. equality and explain the importance of equity as a companion to diversity and inclusion.
- Participants will be able to describe common barriers that exist for African Americans in the field of addiction and recovery.
- Participants will be able to give examples of solutions for treatment providers to provide more equitable care.

She is the founder of Legacy Healing and Therapy Services, LLC and Third Way Solutions, Inc., two unique community focused businesses offering strategy, coaching, and therapeutic partnership for individuals, groups, and organizations. Freeborn’s mission is to build beloved community that reckons with the truth of historical oppressions to actualize equity justice, and liberative solutions for all people, but particularly people who are Black, brown, queer, and trans-identifying.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
