The Intersection of DEA, Opioids, and MAT

Description
As a result of the opioid crisis, more and more primary care providers are being asked to treat those suffering from opioid use disorder (OUD) through the use of medication assisted treatment (MAT). This course will cover the United States Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA) authority and role relative to MAT along with SAMHSA requirements and resources, patient limits, and red flags. The goal of the course is to empower and educate providers with the most current information available linking OUD, DEA and federal law while alleviating any and all concerns from those providers contemplating this type of medicine.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe in at least three ways how the DEA’s, SAMHSA’s and the FDA’s play a role in medication assisted treatment including the requirements for lawfully prescribing controlled substances.
- Participants will be able to identify four “red flag” indicators for diversion and unlawful medical practices, and understand common MAT risk areas by a review of recent criminal and civil case studies.
- Participants will be able to identify two important strategies in operating and implementing a zero risk MAT practice.

Dennis Wichern is a partner in Prescription Drug Consulting LLC, where he focuses his efforts on DEA MAT and OTP compliance and training services to protect healthcare organizations, providers, and pharmacies nationwide. His experience includes 30 years of public service as a DEA Special Agent retiring in 2018 as the Special Agent in Charge of the Chicago Field Division where he directed a team of approximately 550 employees. Wichern is a recognized expert on the dangers of heroin and the prescription drug epidemic and routinely speaks to healthcare organizations, MAT and OTP providers, and pharmacies to identify methods to better safeguard their practices and reduce the professional and operational risks emanating from these threats.

This course meets the qualifications for one (1) hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $15 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
