Description
Integrating culturally relevant music into substance use disorder treatment has the potential for greater provider-to-client understanding and connectivity. The purpose of this session is to provide a broad appreciation for the African American client’s cultural DNA. This session will result in the participant’s increased understanding of the African American culture and expose the participant to aspects of culturally informed comprehensive care. Participants will learn about why and how music and religion are part of the fabric of the Black community.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to explain the historical significance of music and religion in the African diaspora and the evolution of its cultural context.
- Participants will be able to summarize the need for and benefits of integrating culturally based music and religious wellness practices into substance use disorder treatment.
- Participants will be able to describe content creation and techniques for integrating music into substance use disorder treatment.
Presenter
Grady Anthony Austin
Grady Anthony Austin was born and raised in Buffalo, New York and has made Seattle, Washington his home for over 30 years. After serving in the United States Navy, he began working in the community via social services and ministerial work. Austin went on to become the assistant director, assistant pastor, addiction counselor and course facilitator at the Matt Talbot Center, an intensive outpatient substance use disorder treatment program in downtown Seattle. He also served as an executive music pastor for several churches in the Seattle area. In 2015, he formed Grady Austin Coaching, which provides a holistic approach to client wellbeing through a combination of traditional counseling methods with wellness practices and techniques. When Austin is not working, you can find him enjoying his family, singing, or riding his motorcycle.

Content Level
All levels
- Beginning level courses introduce learners to a content area; include information about a condition, treatment method, or issue; and involve learning and comprehending content.
- Intermediate level courses provide information that builds on knowledge practitioners with some experience already have. These courses focus on skill-building or adding knowledge, possibly following a brief overview of basic information, and involve using information in concrete situations and understanding the underlying structure of the material.
- Advanced level courses provide content for participants who have been working in the content area and have a clear understanding of the issues. These courses cover and address the complexities involved in the work and involve synthesizing material to create new patterns or structures or evaluating material for a specific purpose.

To earn a CE Certificate for viewing this webinar, you must view the webinar in its entirety, pass the CE quiz, and complete the online survey evaluation.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
