Description
This presentation will discuss strategies for effectively assessing, conceptualizing, and treating co-morbid eating disorders and substance use disorders. The presentation will begin with a brief review of quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies, followed by a short discussion around case conceptualization. The majority of the presentation will focus on psychotherapeutic interventions, with an emphasis on strategies drawn from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Specific examples of the use of a diary card, chain analysis, and solution analysis will be shared in order to demonstrate practical application of the material presented.
Learning Objectives
- Describe at least two effective methods for assessing eating disorders and substance use disorders, and the importance of using this information to make recommendations for an appropriate level of care.
- Describe strategies for increasing and sustaining motivation for change.
- Describe at least three treatment strategies that can be used to effectively treat eating disorders and substance use disorders concurrently.

Alyssa Kalata, PhD
Alyssa Kalata, PhD, is a Licensed Psychologist in the State of North Carolina. After receiving both her Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Clinical Psychology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI, and her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, she completed her predoctoral internship at Duke University Medical Center. Kalata has served in various roles during her professional career, including Clinical Supervisor, Research and Program Development Associate, Associate Clinical Director, Clinical Director, and Clinical Trainer working with patients diagnosed with primary substance use disorders and primary eating disorders in settings providing services at a variety of levels of care.
