Description
Addiction is a genetically-driven disorder. We have known this fact for decades, yet the impact on SUD treatment science has been minimal – until now. This presentation details the use of genetic testing in the assessment and treatment of SUD. The history of the discovery, the underlying pathology, Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS), the Neuroreceptor Reward Cascade, the Genetic Addiction Risk Score (GARS) test, and using GARS to treat RDS will be discussed. This webinar will present recent information as to how genetic burden and the GARS test is impacting the criminal court system, dissecting determinism versus free will. The addiction treatment and recovery landscape is changing, and genetic testing science is creating the change. This science is creating new standards of care in addiction treatment.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to describe Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) and associated genetic types.
- Participants will be able to recall the neurotransmitter pathways, hypodopaminergic genetic polymorphisms, and the role of epigenetics in the processes involved in a blunted brain reward circuitry and craving behavior.
- Participants will be able to explain clinical applications for the induction of dopamine homeostasis via “Precision Addiction Management” coupling Genetic Addiction Risk Score (GARS) and Pro-dopamine regulation (KB220) with therapy.
- Participants will be able to summarize the novel work related to the utilization of GARS as a way of detecting “determinism vs. free will” and the conversion of incarceration to rehabilitation in the judicial system for felony DWI offenders.

Kenneth Blum, PhD
Kenneth Blum, PhD, has been featured in almost every news media outlet in the world. His alcoholism gene discovery was featured in the top fifty scientific discoveries in Discovery Magazine. His discovery work in the genetic mutations causing Reward Deficiency Syndrome (RDS) and addiction have led to the world’s first and only patented genetic test: GARS (Genetic Addiction Risk Score). Blum has over 600 publications in journals, including Science, Nature, Journal of American Medical Association, Proceedings National Academy of Science, Frontiers Psychiatry; and also authored seventeen books. Blum currently is Chief Scientific Officer of Geneus Health and the Blum Institute. His major academic appointment is Full Research Professor Western University Health Sciences, School of Biomedical Sciences.

Richard Paul Green, III, BSBA, LCDC
Richard Paul Green, III, BSBA, LCDC, is the CEO of Precision Recovery, a substance use treatment provider in San Antonio, TX. He is a national speaker, author, and researcher in the field of addiction. He is the Parliamentarian for the Texas Board of Addiction Professionals. Green has held a seat on the National Public Policy Committee with NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals since 2014. He is the past chairman of the San Antonio College Chemical Dependency Program Advisory Board and serves on the Bexar County Opiate Treatment Task Force. He is trained in quality of motivation theory, choice theory, somatic experiencing therapy, and integrated addiction medicine treatment. Green is publishing research about legal issues in felony DWIs. He lectures on the treatment of opioid use disorder and has been a keynote speaker at the national NAADAC conference.
