Description
The greatest challenge using motivational interviewing (MI) may be finding the “true” ambivalence it’s supposed to address. This webinar is designed to assist clinicians who want to use MI effectively with clients with co-occurring disorders. By returning to the basics and exploring the areas of focus and evocation, each participant will learn when it’s appropriate to use MI. By helping the client reveal what they are conflicted about, they begin to make their own arguments for change. It is particularly effective with those presenting with co-occurring disorders since their resistance to change is often quite challenging.

  • Apply the theory and methods of motivational interviewing (MI) to the therapeutic relationship with clients with co-occurring disorders.
  • Demonstrate specific motivational interviewing skills to respond to resistance and overcome obstacles to recovery.
  • Synthesize motivational interviewing techniques with other evidence-based approaches to improve patient outcomes.

Richard Choate, LADC, CADC II

Richard Choate, LADC, CADC II, has worked in the field of communication for over 45 years and professionally in the area of addiction and recovery for 17 years. He was a counselor and supervisor at Hazelden Betty Ford in Center City, MN. As Manager of Recovery Support, he was a key developer of the Connection program, a very successful enhanced case management program. Choate was a lecturer and presented workshops on Relapse Prevention and the Twelve-Step Program. He presented trainings on motivational interviewing and recovery management for Hazelden Betty Ford staff and the Professionals in Residence (PIR) program. He is currently a content expert/adjunct instructor with the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. He instructs the online course “Advanced Motivational Interviewing.”

To earn a CE Certificate for viewing this webinar, you must view the webinar in its entirety, pass the CE quiz, and complete the online survey evaluation.

  1. Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
  2. A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
  3. Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
