Description
Counterconditioning (aversion) treatment has been used as one component of multidisciplinary treatment programs for SUDs for 85 years. Targeting cravings for a substance, counterconditioning therapy enhances a patient’s ability to comfortably move through a substance cue response situation by applying cognitive-behavioral and other coping techniques obviating relapse. Addressing the growing number of substance use disorder patients – for alcohol, opiate/opioid, amphetamine(s), cocaine and cannabis – including never before treated and multiple relapsing persons – demands that treatment options beyond traditional therapies for SUDs be considered as a component of multimodal treatment program. Counterconditioning therapy is an effective, yet underutilized treatment option.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will gain an understanding of the therapeutic principles inherent to counterconditioning therapy, as well as counterarguments to its use.
  • Participants will learn indications for use of counterconditioning therapy and a profile of appropriate candidates.
  • Participants will have an accurate overview of an underutilized clinical tool that can dramatically improve patient outcomes.
