Description
Compulsive behaviors dissociate the user from uncomfortable feelings, numbing emotional pain while creating complications and consequences. But stimulants, especially when combined with sex, fuel a desire for intensity and connection as well. Combining stimulants and sex dissociates the user from low self-worth, shame, and other inhibitions while boosting arousal, a sense of invincibility and high-risk sex. Providing skills to manage the lower intensity of recovery is essential, along with helping the client develop a sense of compassion for themselves. This workshop reviews strategies to recognize emotional triggers, improve affective regulation, and manage and re-differentiate fused behaviors, all of which are essential for recovery and the restoration of healthy intimacy as well.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will identify the relationship between stimulant use, high-risk sex, and the negative impact on healthy connection and intimacy.
- Participants will demonstrate knowledge of the nature and role of intensity in the addictive cycle.
- Participants will list specific clinical techniques that help clients understand and manage the role of intensity in their addiction and recovery.

David Fawcett, PhD, LCSW, is Vice President for Clinical Programming at Seeking Integrity, which develops and operates treatment programs for sex, porn and chemsex addiction. He specializes in stimulant use disorder and sexual behavior and is the author of the award-winning book Lust, Men, and Meth: A Gay Man’s Guide to Sex and Recovery. He is the host of a weekly webinar called “Addiction Q&A” and a podcast series called “Sex, Love and Addiction: Healing Conversations for Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Men” at www.sexandrelationshiphealing.com. Fawcett is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2018 NALGAP President’s Award. Most recently, he co-produced Crystal City, a 90-minute documentary that follows the struggles and successes of eight gay men in recovery from crystal meth in New York.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $25 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
