Description
The supervision working alliance is an integral part of the counselor preparation process. Although the stages of supervision may be similar for online counseling programs and face-to-face counseling programs, there are unique barriers to the process of building a quality supervisory alliance via an online forum. Facilitating the therapeutic alliance is the ultimate goal in both forums, so understanding the barriers that are specific to an online forum will be presented along with solutions to those barriers. Participants will have an opportunity to learn how supervision theories address the working alliance and the differences and similarities between building the relationship in-person vs. online. This knowledge will also include solutions to barriers that inhibit the working alliance in an online forum.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will learn the intricacies involved when conducting online supervision.
- Participants will be able to understand common barriers to building a working alliance between supervisor and supervisee in an online environment.
- Participants will be able to describe how supervision theories address the working alliance.
Presenters
Eileen McCabe O’Mara, EdD, LADC, NCC
Eileen McCabe O’Mara, EdD, LADC, NCC, is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor in Minnesota and Core Faculty in Addiction Counseling at Capella University since 2009. At Capella, O’Mara has taught addiction counseling, addiction studies, and clinical courses. She represented the school and addiction counseling on the Dean’s Council. In 2019, O’Mara retired as a member of the Minnesota Recovery Connection Board after serving for six years. She is a professor emerita and the former Assistant Dean of the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies. She has published in the addiction counseling field and presented nationally and internationally. Most recently, O’Mara presented at the NAADAC 2016 and 2019 Annual Conferences on online clinical supervision of addiction counseling students.

Ann Melvin, PhD, CRC, CADC, LCPC
Ann Melvin, PhD, CRC, CADC, LCPC, is Core Faculty in the College of Education and Human Services at Capella University. She is the fieldwork coordinator for the Addiction Studies Program and teaches a combination of mental health and addiction studies courses. Melvin was awarded the Stephen Shank Recognition and has been honored as Faculty of the Month during her career at Capella University. Her recent publication as a co-author with colleagues, entitled Improving Rehabilitation Counselors’ Knowledge of Co-occurring Disorders, Screening, Brief Intervention, And Referral to Treatment Practices, was published last year. She has presented at the NAADAC Annual Conference and is a member of NAADAC and the American Counseling Association (ACA). Her current research interests are in supervision, co-occurring disorders, and suicide prevention and intervention.

- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
