Description
The U.S. is now facing two intersecting health crises, the ongoing opioid overdose epidemic and the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, we now live in a world where science can be quickly mobilized to find solutions to mitigate the worst effects. NIDA has swiftly responded to the COVID-19 crisis by supporting research in areas of basic science, prevention, treatment, epidemiology, and implementation, particularly at the intersection with substance use disorders. This presentation will provide an update on NIDA science underway to address the opioid crisis during the COVID pandemic and the implications for practice and policy.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will examine the impact of the COVID pandemic on preventing and treating substance use disorders.
- Participants will learn about research underway by NIDA to lessen the impact of these colliding public health problems.
- Participants will acquire an understanding of how science can inform policy and practice related to addressing substance use disorder.
Presenter
Jack B. Stein, MSW, PhD
Jack B. Stein, MSW, PhD, joined NIDA in August 2012 as the Director of the Office of Science Policy and Communications (OSPC). He has over two decades of professional experience in leading national drug and HIV-related research, practice, and policy initiatives for NIDA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) where, before coming back to NIDA, he served as the Chief of the Prevention Branch. In March 2019, Stein was appointed NIDA Chief of Staff.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $25 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
