Description
This presentation examines the role a counselor’s implicit socio-economic status ("SES”) bias may play in treatment disparities and whether training can effectively reduce clinician biases. Current literature indicates clinician biases negatively impact clients & treatment outcomes. This evidence suggests that one possible cause is implicit social class bias. This session will be a mixture of current literature review on social class bias, culturally competent counseling, and national trends in substance use disorders, mental health diagnoses, and utilizing experiential activities. This presentation is designed to educate supervisors and clinicians in the adverse effect class bias can have on the therapeutic relationship.
Learning Objectives
- Educate supervisors & clinicians on the adverse effect class bias can have on the therapeutic relationship.
- Increase awareness of the clinician’s ability to identify social class biases and to address this bias in their professional settings.
- Create an open and honest dialogue regarding SES bias and awareness within the target audience to act as a catalyst for advocacy within the profession.

Anthony Rivas, EdD, LMFT, LAC, MAC, SAP
Anthony Rivas, EdD, LMFT, LAC, MAC, SAP, is an Assistant Professor at California State University Sacramento. He has a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and 18 years of experience in the substance use disorder and mental health professions. Rivas holds clinical licensure in Colorado as an LAC and LMFT with MAC and US DOT SAP credentials. His research interests focus on student development of first generation students, and how socio-economic-status affects clinical relationships, diagnosis, and prognosis.

She has been in private practice in Colorado since 2010 holding three clinical licenses, LPC, LMFT, LAC, as well as an Approved Clinical Supervisor & MAC credential. Her research interests include counselor self-efficacy, supervision, and professional identity.

- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
