Description
It is one thing to have a problem and another to be a problem. Substance use disorder problems turn people into problems, and this identification and confusion provokes shame, denial, and relapse. Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidenced-based practice that gives counselors the perspective and tools for working creatively with the all the parts of the self to deactivate shame and empower hope and change. IFS makes counseling a joy.
Learning Objectives
  • Understand Mind/Body map from the perspective of Internal Family Systems and identify the characteristics of the SELF in contrast to PARTS.
  • Able to identify some of their parts and see where these fit into the IFS framework and how this could help inform their work.
  • Able to identify the basic structure of their clients' parts in addiction treatment and imagine ways to work from a position of curiosity, creativity, and openness.
