Up to 50 million Americans live with chronic pain at any given time. Minorities who suffer with chronic and intractable pain are facing widespread stigma and public misunderstanding of the difference between tolerance, physical dependence, and addiction when treating a chronic illness. What roles do race and culture play in prescribing practices, pain reporting and treatment, and psychological outcomes? Because chronic pain can affect one's mental health, counseling can be an integral key in treatment. As therapists who practice within multidisciplinary teams or within the community, what is our role in helping to manage chronic pain management?
Learning Objectives
- Understand the difference between chronic and acute pain.
- Identify and review screenings/assessments that evaluate risk factors that may contribute to the addiction of opioids when treating chronic pain.
- Examine how race & culture impacts prescribing practices, patient reporting and treatment and psychological outcomes.

Sherrá Watkins, PhD, LCMHC-S, LCAS, CRC, CCS, BC-TMH, is the Director of Wellness Counseling at American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in Saint Maarten. She earned her degrees from East Carolina University, including a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Rehabilitation Counseling & Administration, a Master of Science degree in Clinical Counseling & Substance Abuse Counseling, a Master of Arts in Education degree in Health Education, and Bachelor of Science degree in School Health Education. Watkins’ research focuses on decreasing the stigma of mental health, chronic pain and chronic diseases among African Americans. She is the co-owner of Sister WELLS, Coaching, Counseling & Consulting, PLLC (2017) with Charla Blumell and Shawnte' Elbert, all who are proud members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $25 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
