Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals still face extensive discrimination and prejudice in society. Professionals are called to affirm clients' ability to integrate their sexual identity in healthy ways into their personal recovery, as well as support LGBT-inclusivity in the larger community. This free webinar provides information and strategies designed to promote the provision of culturally competent and appropriate addiction treatment, prevention, and mental health care to LBGT individuals. It will review knowledge, skills, and beliefs about sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression that have been identified to be essential in providing LGBT affirmative services.
Learning Objectives
- describe the differences between sexual behavior and sexual orientation;
- distinguish the differences between sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression; and
- summarize the diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, age, class, and other subcultures within the LGBT communities and its impact on receiving services.

Philip T. McCabe CSW, CAS, CDVC, DRCC
Philip T. McCabe CSW, CAS, CDVC, DRCC, is a Health Educator for Rutgers School Of Public Health, in the Office of Public Health Practice, faculty for the NJ Medical School/UBHC Psychology Internship Training and an adjunct instructor for Rutgers Center for Alcohol and Drug Studies. He is a Certified Social Worker, Nationally Certified Addiction Specialist in the areas of Compulsive Gambling, Sexual Addiction, Alcoholism, Tobacco, and other Drugs. Certified Domestic Violence Counselor and Disaster Response Crisis Counselor. Phil served as a staff consultant for the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center NYC. And The National Voices and Faces of Recovery LGBT SpeakOut. Additionally he was the former chairperson of The National Coalition for LGBT Health -Tobacco Work Group on Treatment Issues. He has provided public health advocacy and community education within the LGBT communities since 1979. Mr. McCabe serves on the Board of Directors of NALGAP: The Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Addiction Professionals and their Allies, and holds the position of President. He contributed to the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, A Provider's Introduction to Substance Abuse Treatment for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Individuals' as a principal writer on family issues and for the"Healthy People 2010 LGBT Companion Document." In 2009, he was selected as a Master Trainer for the SAMSHA/CSAT Addiction Technology Transfer Center Curriculum on LGBT Clients. He served on the Board of Trustees of NJCASA, the New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault and also serves on the Governor's Advisory Council Against Sexual Violence Prevention and Public Education Committee. He has presented workshops at various local, state and national events and also in the United Kingdom.

- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
