Description
Our state and national legislators make the laws that impact the work we do in addiction treatment – yet, generally speaking, they know very little, if anything, about what we do. We can educate them or leave that to chance, or worse, the pharmaceutical companies, insurance lobbyists, and pro marijuana folks! We CAN make an impact but we MUST engage in the process. This workshop will discuss the who, how, why and when of legislative advocacy and give you tools to equip others. You will learn how to build an advocacy machine in your workplace and/or any organization you wish to mobilize.
Learning Objectives
- Describe how public input in the legislative process influences policy, and how to have that influence.
- Engage others to advocate on behalf of a bill.
- Identify three ways to create a mechanism to put a specific advocacy action into motion.
Presenters
Sherri Layton, MBA, LCDC, CCS
Sherri Layton, MBA, LCDC, CCS, began working in the addiction treatment field in 1977 and has worked for La Hacienda Treatment Center since 1992. She manages outpatient and alumni support services around the state, is a member of the Executive Team, and coordinates La Hacienda’s advocacy efforts, statewide and nationally. Layton frequently speaks on topics related to addiction treatment, legislative advocacy, clinical supervision, and leadership development. She is co-chair of NAADAC’s Public Policy Committee and has served on that committee since 2008. Layton was selected as the Senator Harold E. Hughes Advocate of the Year for 2014. She completed an Master’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on leadership in May 2009 at the University of Texas in San Antonio. She also has a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $15 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
