Description
Our state and national legislators make the laws that impact the work we do in addiction treatment – yet, generally speaking, they know very little, if anything, about what we do. We can educate them or leave that to chance, or worse, the pharmaceutical companies, insurance lobbyists, and pro marijuana folks! We CAN make an impact but we MUST engage in the process. This workshop will discuss the who, how, why and when of legislative advocacy and give you tools to equip others. You will learn how to build an advocacy machine in your workplace and/or any organization you wish to mobilize.
Learning Objectives
  • Describe how public input in the legislative process influences policy, and how to have that influence.
  • Engage others to advocate on behalf of a bill.
  • Identify three ways to create a mechanism to put a specific advocacy action into motion.
