As the nation demographically represents a multitude of cultures, our ability to engage in thoughtful and meaningful discussions on cultural issues, remains ever present. No one where is this more salient than in our professional roles as service providers. Whether it means understanding our own insecurities when discussing these issues or when facilitating these dialogues when helping others, understanding one's own cultural background as a way to enhance our multicultural dialogues, both personally and professionally, is a necessary outcome. This free webinar addresses the current literature on color-blind racial ideology and the major themes that surfaced from 20 psychologists examining their own cultural influences and the impact this examination has had in their personal and professional lives.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the importance of understanding the rationale and limitations of a color-blind racial ideology (CBRI);
- Identify the challenges and benefits of understanding and discussing their own and others cultural identities; and
- Provide examples of how to address and incorporate cultural conversations as service providers.
Presenter
Dr. Miguel E. Gallardo
Dr. Miguel E. Gallardo is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of Aliento, The Center for Latina/o Communities at Pepperdine University. He maintains an independent/consultation practice where he conducts therapy with adolescents and adults and consults with organizations and universities on developing culturally responsive systems. He teaches courses on multicultural and social justice, intimate partner violence and professional practice issues. Dr. Gallardo's areas of scholarship and research interests include understanding the psychotherapy process when working with ethnocultural communities, particularly with Latina/o communities and in understanding the processes by which individuals develop cultural awareness and responsiveness. Dr. Gallardo is currently Director of Research and Evaluation for the Multiethnic Collaborative of Community Agencies (MECCA), a non-profit organization dedicated to serving monolingual Arab, Farsi, Korean, Vietnamese and Spanish speaking communities. Dr. Gallardo has published refereed journal articles, books and book chapters in the areas of multicultural psychology, Latina/o psychology, and ethics and evidence-based practices. Dr. Gallardo is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Gallardo is currently serving a Governor re-appointed position on the California Board of Psychology. He has been honored for his dedication and commitment to the field of psychology locally, statewide and nationally.

- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
