Description
As recovery professionals, sharing personal stories is a powerful way to develop engagement, connection, and relatability with people we support. But how do we learn to do this effectively? Often, story sharing is something done automatically and without clear intention, but it’s too powerful of a tool not to learn how to do it well. Are our stories effective? Are we causing unintended harm? In this training, we’ll explore how culture impacts our personal art of storytelling. We’ll discover how stories can be received versus the impact that can ultimately benefit the listener. We’ll discuss how personal and recovery values can inform personal story sharing. And with this newfound clarity, we’ll leave with a storytelling rubric to apply to our work using storytelling to support others.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to understand the role of culture in story and be able to identify at least five styles of storytelling.
  • Participants will be able to explore the potential harm of numerous story styles and identify at least six of their personal and recovery values that will inform their desired impact of storytelling in their role.
  • Participants will be able to describe how their stories can have greater impact and apply a simple story rubric to being a more effective storyteller in their role.
