Description
Shame and stigma are examined as significant predisposing factors to increased suicide risk in individuals currently struggling with or in early recovery from substance use disorders. Tying in principles and methods from his recent books on recovery resilience, Bob Weathers, PhD, CMHRS, explains how nuanced physiological changes that occur in the addictive brain often contribute to increased suicidal ideation. Finally, he incorporates cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness strategies, along with creative process and relational neuroscience, into a more advanced set of resources to aid in sustained and successful recovery while at the same time reducing suicide risk in this vulnerable clinical population.
Learning Objectives
- The participant will be able to explain how nuanced physiological changes that occur in the addictive brain often contribute to increased suicidal ideation.
- The participant will be able to differentiate psychological shame and cultural stigma as vital to understanding active substance use disorders, early recovery, and accompanying suicide risks.
- The participant will be able to demonstrate how to clinically apply specific recovery resilience interventions in assisting those who are in recovery from substance use disorders and/or struggling with suicidal ideation.

Bob Weathers, PhD, CMHRS
Bob Weathers, PhD, CMHRS, is a highly-regarded educator, recovery coach, author, and public speaker. Weathers holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology. Over the course of his professional career, Weathers has provided tens of thousands of hours of therapeutic counseling and recovery coaching to satisfied clients. He has also committed over four decades to teaching, training, and inspiring graduate-level mental health providers at several southern California universities, including assisting in the development of their nationally-accredited substance use disorder studies certificate and mindfulness-based clinical training coursework. His two most recent books on substance use disorder recovery are currently in press with Cambridge University Press.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $20 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
