Description
Studies show that 30 to 80% of people in need of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment have some level of cognitive impairment (CI). CI is an umbrella term used to describe a number of conditions, including intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, serious mental illness resulting in loss of cognitive functioning, and more. Due to the opioid epidemic, the number of people with CI caused by overdose is on the rise. Yet, many clinicians feel under-prepared to effectively treat people with SUD and CI. This two-hour training will increase the knowledge base across the SUD workforce in understanding CI, its impact on treatment outcomes, possible signs of CI in individuals with SUD, and techniques and strategies for the SUD treatment of individuals with CI.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will be able to verbalize understanding of the functional presentation of cognitive impairment (CI) in a SUD setting, and identify individuals who could benefit from modified treatment approaches.
- Participants will be able to verbalize their understanding of assessment and treatment planning considerations for individuals with CI.
- Participants will be able to identify general approaches to treatment modification and develop strategies for adapting evidence-based practices.

Julia Brower, Advanced CASAC
Julia Brower, Advanced CASAC, has had two careers: one in Special Education and the other in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment. As Clinical Director of a unique SUD clinic for people with cognitive impairment (CI), Brower was able to combine both of her areas of expertise. Through her work, she became keenly aware of the need for specialized services for people with cognitive impairment (CI). Brower founded Dragonfly Consulting and Training, whose mission is to assist governmental units, provider agencies, and clinicians to improve treatment outcomes for those with CI. Brower is an approved trainer for the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support (OASAS), and has provided training to several counties and organizations in New York. Brower continues to provide treatment as a CASAC with ITAP, the Intensive Treatment Alternative Program run by Dutchess County, NY.

- Upon completing the webinar, you will have access to the CE quiz within the course you are taking. Find the CE quiz and click “purchase.” NAADAC members will be prompted to register for the CE quiz for free, while non-members will be prompted to pay a $25 processing fee to access the quiz.
- A score of 80% or higher is required to pass the CE quiz and access your CE certificate. You have 10 opportunities to pass the quiz. If you are unable to pass the quiz in the allocated number of tries, then you must retake the course.
- Upon passing the CE quiz, you will be required to complete the survey evaluation for the course. Once that is completed, your CE certificate will be immediately available to print.
