Description
The evolution of trauma-informed care in addiction treatment settings has limited consistency. There is also a lack of specificity in how to apply trauma-informed care principles to specific substance use disorders, such as opioid use disorder (OUD). Compared to medication-free programs, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) significantly reduces the risk of overdose death, reduces illicit opioid use, reduces risk behaviors for the transmission of blood-borne infection, and improves retention in care. Despite these facts, only 30 to 50% being treated for OUD receive MAT. Trauma-informed care for opioid treatment includes MAT as a critical component for evidence-based treatment. This presentation will include updated research and best practices on trauma-informed care for opioid treatment.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to conceptualize opioid use disorder through a trauma lens.
  • Participants will be able to apply practical steps on how to integrate trauma-informed care.
  • Participants will be able to describe the impact of negative stigma for opioid treatment recipients.
