Description
How has the commercial tobacco industry disproportionally targeted Black communities with menthol products—and what are the health harms as a result? What can you do to help patients quit tobacco use and support recovery? Addressing these questions and more are Ebony Griffin, MPH, Associate Director for Health Equity, and Brenna VanFrank, MD, MSPH, Senior Medical Officer, from CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health. These two experts will discuss the health burden and key drivers of disparities that Black communities and behavioral health populations face from commercial tobacco. They will explore menthol and its relationship to tobacco products, patterns of use, nicotine dependence, and disproportionate marketing to specific groups of people, especially Black communities. They will also discuss systems-level strategies that increase clinical cessation interventions and population-level strategies that create societal conditions for smoking cessation success – both key factors in advancing health equity.
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to identify the health burden and key drivers that African American communities face from commercial tobacco.
  • Participants will be able to describe why it is vital to establish helpful programs for cessation support.
  • Participants will be able to implement both systems-level and population-level strategies that promote smoking cessation.
