Addressing Faculty Misconduct

Program Description
Faculty members are indispensable to the nation’s colleges and universities and play central roles in advancing institutional missions relative to teaching and scholarship. The vast majority of faculty are hardworking, dedicated members of the profession who share a strong commitment to pursuing the university’s mission. On rare occasions when faculty members fail to meet expectations or otherwise engage in misconduct, administrators find themselves confronting the question of how they can address unsatisfactory behavior, if at all. Especially with respect to tenured faculty, administrators can sometimes be hesitant to proceed with any corrective action, when in fact, there are many lawful actions they can undertake, consistent with contracts, governing laws, institutional policies, and management strategies.
This webinar will address faculty performance management, with a particular emphasis on:

  • Performance Management Strategies
  • Non-Disciplinary Strategies for Managing the Academic Unit
  • Faculty Discipline Short of Termination
  • Practical Advice for Deans and Department Chairs
Attendees should leave the webinar better equipped to navigate faculty misconduct issues when they arise and respond in ways designed to correct the misconduct, or when that is not possible, position the institution favorably if and when it is called upon to defend an adverse employment decision.
