Global Engagement in an Uncertain World: Legal and Strategic Challenges When Operating Across Borders

Global Engagement in an Uncertain World:
Legal and Strategic Challenges When Operating Across Borders

June 11, 2026

Colleges and universities have long recognized the benefits that international research collaborations, study abroad, and other transnational projects and degree programs bring to the academic community. However, today’s global engagements involve an increasingly complex and evolving set of regulatory requirements, geopolitical tensions, and safety and security concerns. Current global events—from U.S.-China tensions and conflicts in the Middle East to regulator scrutiny—have reshaped how higher education institutions approach international engagement. Institutions now face significant legal, financial, operational, and reputational risk in today’s global landscape.
This two-hour webinar will examine the safety, security, and compliance challenges facing international programs, research collaborations, study abroad programs, and other global partnerships and projects. Panelists will discuss practical strategies for identifying, assessing, and mitigating these risks while maintaining institutional mission and academic collaboration in a rapidly changing global environment. Topics will include:
  • Protecting faculty, students, and staff participating in international programs, collaborations, and study abroad activities through effective risk mitigation, crisis management, contingency planning, and emergency response protocols;
  • Current challenges in research security, foreign influence, and cross-border research collaborations, including trends in federal investigations and enforcement—spanning from lessons learned to what’s on the horizon; and
  • Practical considerations for campuses to help them better prepare and manage today’s global challenges while maintaining their commitments and remaining engaged internationally.
Who Should Attend?
This webinar will be of interest to college and university attorneys and other higher education professionals responsible for advising institutions on research security, international collaborations and projects, study abroad programs, and mitigating legal and other risks posed by international initiatives and global contracts. Other campus leaders with responsibilities for compliance and risk mitigation with respect to their campuses’ efforts to engage globally should also attend.
