Transgender Student-Athletes and What Comes Next
July 9, 2026
On June 30th, the U.S. Supreme Court released its decision in Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., two closely watched consolidated cases addressing state laws that restrict transgender students’ participation in athletics consistent with their gender identity. The Court ruled that such laws do not violate the Equal Protection Clause or Title IX. This decision has significant implications for colleges and universities as 25+ states have passed laws restricting transgender student athlete participation on female sports teams.
