Tax Aspects of Gifting a Home
IRS Program #: X9QQU-T-00818-21-S/O
CE: 2
Speaker: Larry Pon, EA

Many times our clients ask us (or should ask us) the tax consequences of gifting a home.  There are multiple considerations surrounding gifting and the subsequent sale of a home.  We will review the tax considerations regarding basis, capital gains, part-sales/part-gift transactions, and installment sales and installment notes.  We will also do a quick review of how any pending tax legislation may affect these considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand basis
  • When should part-sales/part gift transaction be considered
  • How is the sale of a home taxed after it is gifted
  • Review installment sales and installment notes
  • How the proposed tax changes affect those considerations
