Course Description
The course provides a concise overview of leading non-Google search tools, and how they can be used by Enrolled Agents to sharpen their online intelligence gathering. Attendees will discover a whole new universe of search applications that can be used to discover prime information not found on Google. Participants will walk away with scores of new knowledge sources and streams that will complement their use of Google and improve their online research power.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify Google blind spots, biases, and deficiencies in information retrieval
  • Use at least 4 general search engines that complement their use of Google
  • Utilize at least 5 cluster search engines that group information by topic and discover unexpected relationships between topics.
  • Deploy at least 8 privacy search engines that do not store your queries or track your steps on the Internet.
  • Access at least 12 user-generated content search engines that index content—text, videos, images, reviews.—created by people, rather than brands.

Professional Benefits for the Learner
  • Compare leading search engines, and identify their key strengths and weaknesses
  • Differentiate between “vertical” and “lateral” search strategies and which is best to gather information from a holistic perspective
  • Formulate searches that gather information specifically from public record databases
  • Evaluate results from “people search” platforms
  • Interpret results from leading (but underrated) tax and accounting domain search tools

Who Should Attend
Practitioners who want to diversify their online research toolkit beyond Google, and explore the Internet from multiple perspectives using alternative algorithms, information filters, and domain-specific lenses not available in Google.
