Speaker: Leor Hafuta

This program will discuss in depth various topics learned in the above sessions – portability, stepped-up basis, real estate, IRD, and charitable gifts. More detailed discussions will be provided on these topics than the time allowed in previous sessions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Know what “portability” is and when it is important.
  • Know the rules for stepped up basis.
  • Discuss charitable gifts and how they figure into estate planning.
  • Discuss what happens to real estate in an estate.
  • Understand how the sunsetting of TCJA in 2025 will affect estate and gift tax.
  • Understand what income in respect of a decedent is and how it is taxed.

    With a focus on estate planning, trust administration, taxation, and business matters, Leor Hafuta uses his experiences as an attorney, CPA, and LLM in Taxation to provide efficient, high quality and practical legal representation to individuals, families, family offices and closely held businesses. Leor has experience structuring, implementing, and administering plans for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals such as real estate investors, entrepreneurs, successful professionals, and celebrities.

    Prior to starting his own firm, he was an associate in Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP’s Private Wealth practice.

    While attending Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, Leor obtained his JD and LLM in Taxation (with high distinction). In addition, he was an extern for the United States Attorney’s Office Tax Division and the Honorable Sandra R. Klein of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

    Prior to attending law school, Leor attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he obtained a degree in Business Economics. After graduation he practiced as a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and then started an e-commerce business.

    Leor has been recognized as a Rising Star by California Super Lawyers® (2019-2022) and remains active with the American Academy of Attorney-CPAs (“AAA-CPA”) where he serves as Vice President of the Southern California Chapter. He has spoken at various AAA-CPA and Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (“STEP”) events on tax and estate planning matters and has also contributed to the Amicus Brief on behalf of the AAA-CPA in support of the respondents in the South Dakota v Wayfair, Overstock, & Newegg (No. 17-494) case before the US Supreme Court.

    In his free time, Leor likes to spend time with his wife, hike, play tennis, bake sourdough bread, and play guitar.
