Program Overview
This activity will enable participants to identify why comprehensive sexuality education is essential to health equity and to improved public health outcomes for teens and young adults. Participants will learn about how state code and standards influence sexuality education, as well as how to build local coalitions to promote more scientifically‐accurate, age‐appropriate sexuality education in their own communities. Actions to implement change in one's own community will be shared with learners, including dealing with potential concerns from administrators, parents, and faith‐based communities. The activity will address myths and misconceptions about abstinence‐based and comprehensive sexuality education, including why abstinence‐only until marriage curricula can be exclusionary for members of the LGBTQ + community as well as other minority/marginalized populations. Participants will be able to identify qualities of evidence‐based, affirming, inclusive sexuality curricula which can positively influence rates of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Methods to track outcomes and evaluate programs will be outlined. A list of educational resources will be provided to participants.

Learning Outcomes
As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will be able to:
  • Articulate why comprehensive sexuality education is critical to public health outcomes for teens and young adults.
  • Utilize data, evidence‐based practice, and nursing leadership skills to build consensus for comprehensive education programs for their students.
  • Describe how abstinence‐only education excludes LGBTQ + and other minority groups, placing them at risk of poor health outcomes.
  • Define characteristics of abstinence‐only and comprehensive sexuality education programs.
  • Take methods for tracking outcomes and evaluating programs back to their schools.
