Program Overview
In this educational activity, the presenters will discuss the medical implications for cannabis prescriptions in school and the legal, ethical and compliance considerations of having those medications in school. Dr. Shackelford will discuss the increased use of CBD oil and other forms of medical cannabis that is being used to help children with chronic health conditions. Dr. Morhaim will provide guidance and resources on ways to mitigate the school nurse, the school nursing supervisor and school staff members' level of risk and exposure to liability concerns surrounding the medical cannabis prescription use at school. This discussion will help school nurses and school nurse administrators to develop and expand their leadership skills in being change agents for their schools and districts through potential policy development and policy change.

Learning Outcomes
As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will be able to:
  • Identify 2 key uses of CBD oil in children with chronic conditions.
  • Share at least 2 to 3 benefits of medical cannabis use in children with chronic health conditions.
  • List 1 way to improve the level of risk and exposure of liability in the school setting.
  • Share 2 resources that can be used to mitigate legal and ethical compliance issues with medical cannabis in your state.
  • Describe what is known about the safety and potential risks of cannabis use and abuse in children.

Intended Audience

This continuing education program is a knowledge-based activity developed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses who are interested in child and adolescent health.
