Program Overview
School nurses are the main healthcare providers that provide frontline care to students and families that may have been affected either directly or indirectly by human trafficking in various forms. Since human trafficking incidents continue to rise in the United States and around the world, it’s imperative that school nurses are educated and made aware of the different forms of trafficking that can infiltrate the school community and healthcare settings, so they can be prepared to identify signs of trafficking, advocate for resources and educate the school community on this issue. By bringing this education to school nurses we can increase the level of attention and awareness that schools have regarding the topic, with the hope that we will be able to decrease the chances and opportunities for students to be trafficked that are most vulnerable in their schools. Ultimately, encouraging them to collaborate and partner with school leadership to provide safe spaces for students, to develop policies and procedures and to advocate for resources and assistance that may not have been discussed or readily available to students and families without this national conversation.
