Program Overview
A small grant is generally designed for a short-term research project with limited funding. A major intention of a grant is the economic benefit to support a project but also to assemble resources and address critical issues within an agency. A successful grant proposal should focus on the mission and the interests of the funding organization, allow for innovation, and potentially lead to larger grants. A good grant is the result of research, a well-written proposal, and a well-matched funding source.
Opportunities exist for those with a vested interest in school health, particularly school nurses, to apply for grants that will promote the health and well-being of children where they play, live, and attend school. This session will share examples of and offer resources to incorporate a spirit of inquiry to write a grant related to school health.
This session will use an existing request for proposal to model the grant writing process, specifically the research question and aims section. 

Learning Outcomes
As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will be able to: 

• State why grant writing is an essential skill for the 21st-century school nurse.
• Brainstorm evidence-based research questions that are in alignment with NASN’s mission.
• Write a research question and one aim and refine both based on small-group and workshop leader feedback.
• Learn how to use skills in advocacy and leadership to follow-up if a grant is not accepted.

Intended Audience
This continuing education program is a knowledge-based activity developed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses who are interested in child and adolescent health.
