Program Overview
To meet the Healthy People 2020 goal of 80% vaccine uptake of the HPV vaccine to prevent the cancers caused by HPV, school nurses need current and accurate knowledge about the vaccine and must take an active role in implementing the recommended interventions from the CDC Guide to Community Preventive Services. Safe and effective vaccines are available, and both boys and girls are recommended to receive the vaccine when they are 11 or 12 years old. This program targets the school nurse role in supporting informed HPV vaccine decision-making of preteens/teens and their parent/guardians.

Learning Objectives
At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
  • Identify three reasons to prevent HPV infections;
  • Describe the current recommendations for adolescent immunization with the HPV vaccine;
  • Identify two factors known to influence HPV vaccine decision-making; and,
  • List three recommended evidence-based strategies that can be incorporated into school nursing practice to promote the uptake of the HPV vaccine.
