Dr. Ruth Kleinpell is interviewed by Kelly Rath, NP from University of Cincinnati’s Neurocritical Care Unit, today to discuss her article, "Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants in Acute and Critical Care: A Concise Review of the Literature and Data 2008–2018."

  • Ruth Kleinpell, PhD, RN, FAAN

    Dr. Kleinpell is an internationally known and highly respected certified acute-gerontology nurse practitioner with over 25 years of clinical experience. Dr. Kleinpell is a professor and assistant dean for clinical scholarship at the Vanderbilt University School of nursing in Nashville TN. She is the PI for many prior and current research grants. Her research interests include role development for nurse practitioners and outcomes of advanced practice nursing care, scope of practice for APPs in acute care settings, and telehealth to minimize readmissions for high risk patients. She has been the recipient of multiple grants for past and current research endeavors. Recently she served as the PI on a funded 2-year initiative to promote patient and family-centered outcomes in 63 national hospital ICU teams. She currently serves as PI for a national collaborative called Choosing Wisely- APRN initiative.

    She has over 160 peer reviewed articles including those published on APP practice in the American Academy for nurse practitioners, Critical Care Medicine, and the American Journal of critical Care. Dr. Kleinpell is a past-president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and served two consecutive terms as the president of the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses. She has received numerous awards, including the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 and the distinguished service award from the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Critical Care Medicine. Her contributions have elevated APP practice throughout the world.
